Journey 01

Twelve nights
along a cold coast

We move north with the light, not against it. Half the days are spent on water and half on foot, and the itinerary below is the one we actually follow — weather permitting, which it frequently does not.

  1. 01–02

    Arrival and the long inlet

A slow first day on purpose. Boat transfer at dusk, then two nights at the harbour house while the group finds its rhythm.

  2. 03–05

    The outer skerries

Three days among low islands, landing where the swell allows. Seal colonies, an abandoned light station, and the best cooking of the trip.

  3. 06–08

    Inner fjord and the ridge

The walk everyone remembers. Nine hours up, a night in a stone hut, and a descent through cloud the following morning.

  4. 09–12

    North to the ice edge

Four days running north until the chart stops being useful. We turn around when the guide says so, not when the schedule does.

What the guides wrote down

Unedited entries from last season, published because they are more useful than a brochure.

14 March
Day four

The swell decided for us

We had planned the outer landing for this morning and spent forty minutes arguing with the sea about it before giving up. Instead we took the sheltered channel and found the light station nobody had mentioned to us — three roofless buildings and a brass mechanism still turning in the wind.

“The trip you planned is rarely the trip worth having. Bring a second idea.”
18 March
Day eight

Nine hours to the stone hut

Longest day of the itinerary and the one people write to us about a year later. Two of the group turned back at the saddle, which is a sound decision and not a failure — the boat met them at the lower landing within the hour.

22 March
Day twelve

Far enough

Turned south at 71°04′ with clear water still ahead of us. The group wanted to push on. The forecast said otherwise and the forecast was right by the following afternoon.

“We have never regretted turning around early. Not once in eleven seasons.”
Where we go

Five coasts, and no more

We add a destination roughly once every four years, after a guide has spent a full season living there. Swipe through the current list.
